The concept of Resonance in nature is when an event is repeated in different parts of the world , without any relation between them but with peculiar likenesses. – for example ; pyramids in Egypt and Pyramids in Central America.
I Know deep in my heart that I came up with the idea by myself. It all started picturing yoshi as a smoker attacking princess peach… it all went downhill from there. It was one of those experimental sketches that go beyond the original idea. I thought I was breaking into new ground when I sketched this pic.
Just being curious about it, I ran a google search for “Mario bros, left for dead”. Everything was fine until I saw a pic by Josh Hano with a striking resemblance to my idea. Some variations with the characters and outfits, but in essence almost the same.
Resonance? Coincidence? You name it.
There is something that I have learned. It is very difficult to be completely original, to make something creative that no one else has thought of before.
So after thinking about it for a short period, I said to myself: Myself… To hell with it! I still think my idea is epic, because it was mine! Who cares if someone else thought the same in some other part of the world!? And the execution is in my own terms and style. If you search in DA for any topic, how many results come up? Thousands!! What is the difference among them? Simple. The execution.
So I am very satisfied with my concept and the way it was executed.
After peach-zoey and yoshi-smoker, came Mario-francis, and Luigi-bill. Luigi already had a green hat, so it was just a matter of turning it into a beret. The beard for both brothers was silly but fun. Louis-donkey kong was not a first choice, but being color wise it was the ideal one. He even had a red necktie already.
For the special infected, I sticked to the original ones, witch, tank, boomer, smoker and hunter. Bowser had to be the big boss, so bowser-tank was a logical choice. Boomer –fat, disgusting wario, alright! Hunter-waluigi was also color-wise a good choice. Finally the witch is blonde and zoey is brunette, so I thought about switching places between peach and daisy, but I ditched the idea, because peach is the most well known female character in the Mario universe. I later thought about Rosalina, with her hair covering half of her face and it worked wonders. Daisy was in the original sketch but was ditched for Rosalina. Yoshi-smoker needs no explanation. The horde was a varied assortment of koopas, and goombas.
The pic is sketched, scanned and inked by hand to get that dynamic rough look of the promo poster. There are two versions of that promo, one with a white background and the preliminary version of the characters, and the final version with green background. I went along with the green background version, It looked darker and blended nicely with the gloomy surroundings
Took a lot of time with so many characters.
Over use of burn tool, helped keep the multiple characters merge .
Soo, had to take this out of my system. Now let´s get back to the DID I left unfinished.
